Dhalsim
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:
Over the course of his life, Dhalsim has sought to unify his mind, body and soul through the discipline of Yoga. Now, as he nears his goal, Dhalsim must test himself and his skills before he can rise to a higher state of consciousness. By controlling his mind and body, Dhalsim is able to extend his arms and legs great distances. However, Dhalsim's greatest skill is his patience. He knows that he does not stand a chance in a slugging match. Instead, he concentrates on using his unique abilities to keep his enemies at a distance and to slowly wear them down. While Dhalsim will do everything he can to win, he will never hurt his opponent more than necessary. Before the Shadaloo incident, Dhalsim was a peaceful professor of biophysics at Calcutta University before being imprisoned by General M. Bison. Bison forced him to use his genius to create a mutated creature -- the bio-warrior named Blanka -- that will serve Bison as his ultimate weapon of destruction. Fortunately, Dhalsim secretly brings Blanka to life with more good than bad inside him, ruining Bison's plan. Dhalsim feels compassion for Blanka and for all mankind, and he'll do anything to protect them at all costs from Bison and his evil troopers! It is later revealed that, during his capture, Dhalsim was also forced to work on Cammy's brainwashing when she was just 17 years old, but unlike Blanka's brainwashing, Dhalsim had to use an advanced brainwashing technique by administering an experimental trigger effect drug, which only Bison could activate. Although Dhalsim manages to save Blanka from being brainwashed, this does not go unnoticed as a Bison Guard finds out about this and, during their confrontation, the Guard throws Dhalsim into the mutating machine in which the DNA Mutagens and Anabolic Plasma was being stored. Dhalsim gets drenched with the Mutagens and Plasma, which burns his hair off and gives him his stretching abilites. After the Shadaloo conflict, both Dhalsim and Blanka stayed behind at the exploding Shadaloo base and were left for dead. However, both men manage to survive and Dhalsim decides to never use science again. He becomes the head monk of a Himalayan tribe, and he starts training his people to free the spirit from the materialism that binds it. However, his land has been targeted twice, both by Shadaloo and by the maniacal Satin Hammer, and he has been forced to use his scientific knowledge on both occasions. Even though he fights a different battle, he would assist the Street Fighter team on missions at the Himalayas.

THOUGHTS ON THE CHARACTER:
One of the most interesting characters in the American canon, Dhalsim's backstory is a very powerful one. He's a Yoga Master who is haunted by his past as a scientist. Roshan Seth does a great job as Dhalsim. His performance is great and his philosophical lines are excellently written. A lot of people don't seem to notice this, but Dhalsim gets drenched with Mutagens and Plasma during his confrontation with the Bison Guard, which leaves him bald. Garry Chalk also gives a great job in the cartoon. His performance really fits Dhalsim perfectly. Although Dhalsim has appeared in 5 episodes in total, most of them are flashback cameos. I always felt sympathy for Dhalsim because of his haunted character aspect. A great character thanks to his mystical and philosophical aspects.
