Blanka
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:
Very little is known about this bizarre fighter from the jungles of Brazil. For years, the natives have reported seeing a half-man, half-beast roaming the rain forests. But, it was only within the last year, that the beast named Blanka appeared in the cities of Brazil and challenged any fighter who would dare oppose him. Normally passive and docile, when enraged Blanka attacks like an uncaged animal. Blanka uses his speed and agility to inflict maximum damage on his opponents. He often uses his claws and razor sharp teeth to shred his opponents into small pieces. He was once Carlos Blanka, a peacekeeping soldier and Guile's best friend. Charlie, as his friends called him, was captured by the enemy at the beginning of the Shadaloo incident. General Bison wanted to create the greatest secret weapon the world has ever seen, so he forced a brilliant scientist to create a vicious warrior in his hidden laboratory. Using a specially designed incubation chamber, the warrior was to be biologically brainwashed with evil images. The expected result: the rebirth of Blanka, a "creature" who could now destroy anything in his path! Fortunately, the scientist was able to alter Bison's plans and created a gentler creature, though still frightfully unstable and grotesque in appearance. At the end of the Shadaloo incident, Blanka was presumed dead when Bison's base was destroyed, but somehow managed to survive the explosion and became part of Escher's Street Fighter operation. However, he was so distraught over his menacing appearance that the Street Fighter team decided to send him to Honolulu to test Dr. Kapuna's Fountain of Youth experiment. Although successful, the test was interrupted by an attack and Blanka returned to his mutated state. Later on, he was drenched with more DNA Mutagens which left him with a more violent and psychologically unstable personality. This led to his brief exile from the Street Fighter team, until he finally managed to control his rage. He succesfully learned to be able to control his feral anger and rejoined the team afterwards.

THOUGHTS ON THE CHARACTER:
Blanka is one of the most interesting characters in the American Street Fighter canon. Due to lack of backstory, writer/director Steven E. de Souza had to combine two characters (Jimmy Blanka and Charlie) into one. The result: one of the most endearing characters in the series. Robert Mammone doesn't get to do a lot as Blanka, and even though he doesn't have the character's muscle mass and his hair looks odd, his face make-up is quite neat and his acting is quite good. The scene where Guile meets the sadly mutated Blanka is one of the most intense scenes of the movie. Kim Repia is a little bit more muscular than Mammone, and even though he doesn't have the green make-up, he makes some sudden appearances with his proper green coloring in the Arcade game. The console game used an unfinished sprite set for Blanka, which looks quite awful. In the cartoon, Blanka gains a lot more prominence and has a lot of starring episodes. Scott McNeil's Blanka sounds like a mix of Dr. Claw and Blanka's video game sounds, which is quite cool. An excellently developed character with a lot of emotional and endearing moments, Blanka is another splendidly adapted character that you can relate to.
