About the Site
When I was a kid, I watched a lot of stuff. Mostly re-runs, but also some cartoons of the era. I watched Transformers, G.I. Joe, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Super Friends, the old Paramount Superman and Popeye cartoons, the Batman cartoon and the 1950's Superman show.
But one day, there was a drastic change in plans. My life would never be the same after that day. My father came with a big box. I saw that box and he handed it to me, saying "It's for you". I opened the box, and there they were. A VHS and 12 cool-looking G.I. Joe toys. All of them had the label "Street Fighter". I immediately went to my room to watch the tape, and the remaining hours of the day were the most fun moments I ever had.
A lot of people call this movie "crap", but there are others who quite enjoy it. I personally think it's interesting, because, if it weren't for this movie, I wouldn't even be a fan of the franchise.
I remember Jean-Claude Van Damme saying in an interview: "It's a movie for kids... and their parents". And it's quite true. Street Fighter is what it is because it's not made to just please the fans, but it's made so a kid can watch it with his family. A lot of people praise the Japanese Street Fighter II movie, but that particular film is for a more mature audience, while this one is more for the family.
People also tend to complain about the film not being faithful to the game. That is a complete LIE!!!! The film is very faithful to the game in the storytelling aspect and some concepts. The plot differs a little bit, but some of the main story aspects (like Chun-Li's vendetta) remain intact. This film is a lot more faithful than Super Mario Bros. will ever be. SMB's story was already developed and neatly adapted into the animated cartoons I loved. Aside from the character bios, Street Fighter didn't have quite a storyline yet. What I like about Steven E. de Souza is that he has knowledge about the franchise and the games. de Souza had the very difficult task of developing a story and giving life to these characters. Along with the film crew, de Souza also added some game elements in various segments of the movie (like the bell from Bison's stage).
Even though it was panned by most critics, the movie was a box-office success and has since become a cult classic.
I have never seen a Street Fighter fan site, sadly. I've seen a neat Super Mario Bros. movie fan site, but I never understood why Street Fighter doesn't have one, so I decided to create one.
Hope you enjoy the site and if you have any ideas for it, just mail me.
